Preserving Worker-Firm Attachments: Perspectives from the Pandemic

Tuesday, February 21, 2023 | 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET

In a typical recession, there are economic benefits to business closure as labor and capital are reallocated to more-efficient uses. However, the recession triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic posed an existential risk to the global economy as public health measures threatened the viability of once productive and profitable businesses. In Preserving Links in the Pandemic: Policies to Maintain Worker-Firm Attachment in the OECD (AEI Press, 2023), economists from around the globe analyze the various fiscal and labor market interventions throughout the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that preserved worker-firm attachments in an effort to avert economic catastrophe.

AEI’s Michael Strain and Stan Veuger welcome Jennifer Hunt, Juan Francisco Jimeno, Ricardo Reis, and Ian Schmutte for a discussion of their contributions to the volume and of the broader policy debate.

The Iraq War Series: The Run-Up to the War

Tuesday, February 21, 2023 | 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ET

The year 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. This is the first panel in a series that seeks to provide a fact-based analysis of the Iraq War—the run-up, the war itself, and the aftermath. The panels, moderated by AEI’s Danielle Pletka and Gary Schmitt, will feature decision makers and experts who will discuss the decision to go to war, the conduct of the war, and the years that followed. The actual successes and failures of the Iraq War, the object of mythmaking and politicized history, provide important lessons for US defense and Middle East policies going forward.

How Do Government Deficits and Debt Drive Inflation?

Tuesday, February 28, 2023 | 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET

What is the fundamental cause of inflation or deflation? The fiscal theory of price level argues that the amount of government debt, relative to long-run fiscal policies that repay debt, is the primary determinant of the price level, as opposed to the quantity of money. In his new book, The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level (Princeton University Press, 2023), the Hoover Institution’s John Cochrane presents a comprehensive account of this theory and offers a rethinking of conventional monetary doctrines and institutions.

Join AEI’s Michael R. Strain, Dr. Cochrane, and a distinguished panel of economists for a discussion of the key themes from Dr. Cochrane’s book.

Not Just an Air and Maritime Theater: The Army’s Role in the Indo-Pacific

Monday, February 27, 2023 | 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET

With its vast expanses of ocean and many island chains, the Indo-Pacific is often considered a domain fit for the Navy and the Air Force. But how does the Army contribute to joint warfighting concepts in the region? How can it uphold deterrence in light of China’s increasingly aggressive posture? And what role would the service play in scenarios up to and beyond an invasion of Taiwan, including quarantine and blockade?

Join AEI’s Mackenzie Eaglen and Kori Schake for an armchair conversation with Hon. Christine Wormuth, US Secretary of the Army, and Gen. Charles Flynn, commanding general of US Army Pacific, to answer these questions and more as they explore the Army’s role in the Indo-Pacific.
